Deemed "the greatest private collection of post-impressionist and early-modern art in America" by a critic in The Economist, The Barnes Foundation has some lofty expectations to live up to. According to those who've visited, the museum easily exceeds them. Perhaps that's because it contains works by the likes of Renoir, Picasso, and Matisse—to name just a few.
You might think a gallery distinguished by such illustrious masters would have to be the handiwork of many different collectors, but The Barnes Foundation is actually named for its single contributor, Dr. Albert Barnes. It's his very own private collection that fills the walls at The Barnes Foundation. You have American artist William Glackens to thank for the museum, at least in part. He and Barnes were close friends, and his art (some of which is in the collection) certainly played a role in cultivating Barnes' love of contemporary masterpieces. Head to this smaller museum in Philadelphia, not far from Radwyn Apartments, for a look at some pieces you won't find elsewhere in the city.
